GlossaryThis glossary is intended for those who strive for greater clarity of the computer and data recovery language.
IBM (International Business Machines) - An international computer technology and consulting corporation headquartered in Armonk, New York, USA.

Icons - A small illustration symbolizing a directory or computer functions used on computers’ desktops to assist users.

IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) - A standard electronic interface used between a computer motherboard's data paths or bus and the computer's disk storage devices.

Instant Messaging (IM) - A chat application that allows users to correspond over the Internet via text messages.

Intelligent Stick - The brand name for a USB flash drive memory card invented by the PQI company in 2002.

Interface - The point of interconnection that allows an interaction. Cables are hardware interfaces that allow interaction between computers to a power source, whereas an operating system is an example of a software interface that allows the communication between various programs.

Internet - Worldwide conglomeration of interconnected computer networks that share data using the standard Internet Protocol (IP). The internet is essentially a "network of networks" that consist of millions of networks from all over the world, which share information and offer services, such as electronic mail, online chat, file transfer, and more.

Iomega Zip - A medium-capacity removable disk storage system, manufactured by Iomega.

IP (Internet Protocol) Address - A distinctive set of numbers used to trace another computer on a network. The format of an IP address is a 32-bit string of four digits separated by periods.

Jaz Drive - A 1-gigabyte removable-cartridge disk drive.

Kilobyte - A unit of information equal to 1024 bytes.

Laptop and Notebook - Small, portable battery-powered computers.

Linux - A UNIX® like, open-source operating system developed by Linus Torvalds. Linux is a classic example of free software that can run on both PCs and Macintoshes.

Logical Damage - A damage that is mostly caused by power outages that prevent file system structures from being completely written to the storage medium. The result is that the file system is left in an inconsistent state.
